Eating in Costa Rica
FOOD: Who knew that I would have so many random food experiences. Lets just say living with a host family has been ineresting when it comes to the food. One night I had eaten dinner with fiends and came home hoping my tica mama didnt cook anything for me. I couldnt be more wrong...5 minues after walking in I was greeted with a LARGE plate of rice, beans, chicken, vegetables, a raw plataine and a mango fruit juice smoothie. Thinking to myself "how the f*ck am I going to fit this in my stomach?" And the last thing you can ever imagine doing is insulting the tica mama and saying your not hungry. So I ate it...for about an hour and half...sitting there slowly watching my stomach expand. So then the dad gets home and hands me a big block of sugar...yes, sugar! A sugar cube, colored pink, to be exact. The size of my palm. He explains to me in Spanish that its a pastrey and is hard to come by such quality sugar. Biting into it was rough and hard....but yet again I ate it...at this point I was starting to feel numb in my throat from allthe food I had to shove down it. THEN he pours me a HUGE glass of Agua Duelce...Sugar Water! Yuck! Finished that...rolled myself back to my room and was in shock that I just ate a second dinner of the night.

Another weird food experience: I was told to come out for dinner, only to find black soup with two big black balls in it. I was so confused until I cut into the black ball to discover that it was two hard boiled eggs...uh...are they suppossed to be black? So of course I ate it...and the soup was interesting due to the fact that she added a jar of pickeled vegetables in it. Pickeled carrotts, cucumbers, and couliflower was a great addition to the massive potatoe and black hard boiled eggs. But as polite as I am I ate it....all. Oh, and the side dish (there is always a side dish) was raw maiz..like the stuff they make the corn torillas with...where your suppossed to cook it to make the tortilla...no, not here! I got to eat five thick slices raw. Yum! Thank god I walk everywhere or I would be a big fat cow.

    BIIIIG!!!!!
This made me laugh! We had a girl who stayed with a host family while I was there. She ate so much that she eventually felt so sick we took her to the little hospital in town! Her host momma would have a field day cooking for her and the family. Huge meals in the morning and at night. You are so right, they get offended when you don't enjoy the food! Thank god I was accustomed to the type of food because most of it is like....WHAT THE F&^K is this?!?! haha
THe block of sugar was so adorable! YOur family must adore you!I wish I was there to share some of these amazing moments!
Just a tip...My favorite Costa Rican food...Comida Tipica is the Galla Pinto. It is extremly good with a fried egg. Calories aside it is amazing! Hopfully you'll like it. Its one of the countries signiture dishes. Along with the Casado which is just your standard grocery store on a plate. Your choice of meat, rice, beans, salad, plantains and sometimes an egg. haha Your madre seems to know her way around the kitchen :) When you are out try a Banano con leche! Its just banana blended together with ice cold milk. ITS SO GOOD! They do it with every fruit! AHHHH I miss it so much down there! Can't wait to read your next blog!
    Pura Vida Grande :) haha

F*ck That! There is a certain point when politeness becomes a death wish. Black eggs? Are you kidding me? You have guts Lucy...no one can tell you otherwise, thats for sure. Ask your tica mamma to make you Sesos...trust me, you will love it. Hope all is well Lucy! I love you!

    LOL... YUMMY!!!

I love food so this of course all sounds amazing! I do have some reservations about black hard boiled eggs though... Lol... At lease you can look back and know that you really took advantage of the culture and food the country had to offer!
