The past 3 days....
...have been interesting! Let me just re-cap our travels from Thursday to today..

Thursday- Left on a ferry from Montezuma to Jaco. The boat ride was enjoyable, saw dolphins and a turtle...I felt at ease with having to leave Mal Pais and move on. Was thinking to myself...¨okay Lucy, its not that bad to leave a place you love and go to another spot¨ The dolphins jumping out of the water, the sun shining...life was good...until...

JACO....

People had warned us that Jaco was a crappy dirty city filled with chain fast food places, sleezy ticos, and prostitutes. But we had to see what it was like and get our own impression of the life there. So we pulled of the boat, landed on a beach boardered by a small little village ¨Is this Jaco?¨ We both were so confused. So this tico named Victor welcomed us and explained to us that this definitely wasnt Jaco and we had to catch a bus to get there. While waiting for the bus Victor showed us his lovely phot album of fish he caught, told us stories from his wild party past and then bought us tons and tons of fruit from the fruit stand. So we chilled with Victor eating fruit and trying to keep up with his fast paced story telling. Then the bus arrived...the bus that drove us into shithole...i mean Jaco...

Busy city, tons of people walking the sreets looking blitzed out of their minds, crappy overcast weather, and a hostel that looked like a creepy dungen. So Jamie and I sat on the nasty beach and contemplated why we ever left Mal Pais...not to mention the entire time ticos were hissing and whistling at us. We finally made the decision to suck it up and find a better hostel. We found a new place, in the center of town, right across the street from Quiznos and KFC (definitely not an authentic part of Costa Rica) Being hungry forced us to walk down the streets of cracktown where we found a cheap soda (sodas are places where people eat...not an actual soda drink...just to clarify) We ordered, our food came out and lets just say half my plate filled with chicken bones, runny beans, and rice that tasted like it was reheated 5 times. Jamies sandwich had a lovely amount of ketchup on it...ketchup and turkey made for a tasty meal. We realized we would never ever go back to eat there, even tho our meal literally was only a buck each. He gave me a discount for all the chicken bones.

Our night in cracktown consisted of eating dinner at a nicer resturaunt where we thought no one could bug us...until some drunk American men on vacation from Florida sat their butts down at our table, one of them proceeding to show Jamie his scar on his leg by lifting up his leg and setting his nasty dirty foot on our table. After many dirty looks given by us to them, they realized they over stayed their non exsistent welcome and left our table. After dinner, trying to make a phone call in Jaco was almost impossible. Drug deals going on around you, ticos trying to get your attention while you are talking on the phone...it wasnt pretty. So we decided to lock ourselves up in our hostel and people watch over the balcony, or shall I say prostitute watching. It wasnt a busy business night for the hookers, therefore we got to watch them walk up and down the street in desperate need of business. Lets just say the next morning we booked it fast out of cracktown and took the next bus over to Manual Antonio.

We arrived in Manuel Antonio, releaved to be back on a quiet beach town. Very touristy, with families waiting to spend money on tours and expensive dining...but we still appreciated our hostel set back along the beach and lack of busy busy busy streets. It was a nice change. The best part about our night there was going for a run and mid way thru having rain fall over us thru the trees. It felt liberating and somewhat spiritual running through the rainforest while raining. Once again the simplicity and beauty of nature was more appreciated than anything else.

We left Manuel Antonio after only one night and headed to Playa Dominical...we got here today, found an amazing hostel, already chetted with fun travelers, ate some quality Cansado and now ready to settle in here for a couple days. Jamie and I have definitely found our nitch in what type of towns we like and what town we dislike. Dominical has a similar vibe as Mal Pais and just being close to the ocean, away from vacationers and surrounded by more long term backpackers and locals is much more enjoyable.

From here we dont know what the future holds...we are going to see how we like it here and just live day by day.

Miss you, Love you!! xoxox -Lucy

Wow, Lucy! I could acutally hear your voice in reading these last two postings...like you were here sitting across the kitche table talking to me. I love that you are discovering lessons about life and how to live it at 25 that I am just learing at 55! Like this comment that you wrote: "I have learned to be content with the little things and not be bothered by the things I have no control in changing." (Karen would be so impressed!) I'm proud of you, Lucy, and love you tons!!!

P.S. to Andy: Thank you, thank you, thank you for establishing this blog for Lucy...do you know how much it means to me to be able to read her plans and experiences? And it's all because she has a brother who is thoughtful, giving, talented and loving!

Thank god you made it out of crack town alive Lucy! I am happy to hear that you and Jaime are making conscious decisions about where to stay during your travels... it seems that the places you pick are catering more to your backpacking life style and aren't letting the lures of tourism suck you in! I can't wait to hear what Domincal holds in store for you!

    Love you mama!

I'm 25 and from San Clemente California. I consider myself a free spirit that loves taking risks, whether the outcome is positive or ends up a disaster, the risk is always worth it. I just recently made the decision to travel to Costa Rica for a few months and overwhelm my mind with its beautiful culture and language. I am leaving my job and taking a jump towards unpredictable, yet exciting, new experiences! I am so excited to start this new journey and know only great things will come from it!!
